I took my 70s Marants 2230B receiver for repair around March 2022. It had two issues: some of the pots were scratching and there was a noticeable hum, but still usable, nothing major. Bear in mind their open times are quite limited and I live and work quite far, so it’s very disruptive to get to them for me. But still I chose MWES as they say on their website they are vintage audio repair specialists — I was about to learn this is very far from the truth.
After about a month or so I receive a message saying the receiver was ready for collection. I drive there again, collect the reciever and as soon as I plug it in at home I notice that the hum was still there and on top of that an additional problem had been introduced: the receiver was now unstable and if I increased the volume just a bit past the 3 or 4 the sound would oscilate so much it seemed it would blow my speakers up.
I recorded a video and sent it via email to MWES. They asked me to bring it back to the shop. I drive there again to return it. After many months with no contact, I reach out to them and they say I should be able to collect it again as it was ready. Drive once more, collect the device. Once again the same stability problem persists. I call them and they ask to take it back, which I did.
After many months with no contact, I reach out to them via email. I got no response after multiple tries. I call them and they tell me the engineer working on it wasn’t there. I call again another day, finally I’m told device is still being worked on. Again, many months and no contact. I try email, no reponse multiple times. Clearly they are terrible with their communication with customers. I call and eventually speak with someone called Mike who says he’s the MD.
This goes one for more than 1 year. Eventually I’m told by Mike they are unable repair the device. I expected some compensation as my device was in an usable condition before I took it there and now it wasn’t anymore. Mike tells me to wait as they would try once again. He asked me whether I’d be ok paying more for repair. I said I would depending on how much and whether my device would be working well again or not after.
Again, this goes on for multiple months with extremely poor communication. After some time I’m told they can’t resolve the issue. I say I’d had enough and just get my device back and tell Mike that I’ll let him do whatever he think is right. By now, over a month I received no further communication from Mike or anyone else at MWES, I received no compensation from device being damaged at repair, I received no refund for the PS90 I payed over 1 year ago and no compensation for the multiple drives to MWES that I had to make in this almost 1 year and a half.
I certainly expect a lot more from any service I request. That’s all.
