Steer clear of Le Mac Urbain for computer repairs based on my recent experience. Here’s the rundown:

I dropped off my MBP 2015 for a diagnostic on Jan 28th, 2024, $50.00 + tax for a 3 to 7 day service / response. I told the employee that I suspected issues with the battery and possibly the hard drive. Initially, all seemed well – I was received courteously, and an email account was opened for easy communication.

When offered an expedited 2 to 3 day service for an extra $50.00, I declined. However, after receiving no response to my emails on Feb 8th and 9th inquiring about the diagnostic, I grew concerned.

On Feb 10th, I finally received a call stating they couldn’t proceed without an additional $50.00 for a full diagnostic, citing the need to plug in a temporary battery for assessment. This was frustrating, especially after initially being told a $50.00 diagnostic fee would suffice.

The options presented were a $100.00 full diagnostic (double the original quote), a battery replacement for $400-500 (a steep markup) stressing that there could be other issues with my computer and would be a gamble to invest that amount or purchasing a new computer. The conversation felt more like a sales pitch than a genuine attempt to resolve the issue.

Opting not to proceed with their services, I decided to replace the battery myself after researching the process (this cost me $100.00 and took about an hour – a far cry from the quoted repair costs. And my laptop now works!).

Upon unannounced retrieval of my laptop, I was met with hostility from the manager when I refused to pay the $50.00 for what essentially amounted to unscrewing the laptop cover. Being accused of not wanting to pay for his time, aggression, saying that I had “un sourir fendant”, telling my to leave his store, it got pretty heated… He opted to hold my computer as ransom, leading me to reluctantly pay the fee.

Ultimately, I paid $50.00 for a service I didn’t feel was justified – unscrewing a laptop cover and a sales pitch phone call. Le Mac Urbain’s lack of transparency, communication, and seemingly inflated fees left me thoroughly disappointed with their service.

In a world increasingly crowded out by forms of corporate streamlined “support” that are anything but, what a relief to discover the MAC Urbain. They know their business, take it seriously, and deliver it with a nice balance of friendliness and professionalism. I went to see them in a panic, with a Mac that was melting down on me in a week of tight deadlines. They had this sorted and back in action within the day. I feel like the guy who’s finally found a really good car mechanic that you can trust. Merci le MAC URBAIN!

Getting an appointment the same day is no problem, they seem totally honest and willing to help, and the staff has always fixed things quick.
And when it’s really not worth fixing something, they’ll often find you a replacement that’s reliable and way cheaper than going to the dreaded Apple Store Deathstar downtown.
