I purchased a vacuum cleaner online and picked it up from their store. On the way back from Sydney to Canberra, I decided to check some reviews of the product. Unfortunately, the reviews for the vacuum cleaner were quite negative.
During pickup, I asked the front desk staff about the warranty period. She repeatedly mentioned a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty. When I inquired about a retail warranty, she insisted it was covered but said I would need to contact the manufacturer directly for any troubleshooting or issues. I questioned why I couldn’t return the faulty product to the store and was met with the same response: I had to call Electrolux. She also repeatedly said, “No change of mind, no change of mind,” even though I never mentioned changing my mind. My concern was solely about addressing a major fault through the store rather than the manufacturer, which I believe should be their responsibility.
According to the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), “If your business sold a product or service to a consumer, you cannot refuse to help them by sending them directly to the manufacturer or importer for a remedy. This applies even where the fault was caused by the manufacturer.” Additionally, Bing Lee’s own website states, “We offer a 14-day change of mind period, but require the goods to be unopened, unused, and in new saleable condition. If this is the case, our Customer Care team will provide a return label (for online purchases) for you to post the goods back, or you can visit one of our stores. Change of mind returns may also be subject to a 20% restocking fee if the product has been opened.”
Given this, I am puzzled by the staff’s insistence on “No change of mind.” She was rude, abrasive, and avoided answering my questions directly. It’s clear she needs proper training and a better understanding of Bing Lee’s policies and the ACL.
