CEX – what the feck, no communication

Recently try to sell an HP 255 4GB 500GB laptop after replacing it. Knowing that CEX take great pride in recycling and wishing to save the planet, in fact they seem to indicate the only thing they can’t recycle is a submarine I decided to bring it to them. Initially the Laptop was rejected at the Motherwell branch as it had Windows 8 despite you still being able to sell and buy the laptop on the CEX website. However, I was informed if I updated to Windows 10 I may get some money for it. I dutifully paid to upgrade to Windows 10 and while in Livingston decided to drop in with the Laptop on Sunday. My wife and I waited over 30 minutes as unfortunately there were only 2 people working. Finally we made contact with the shop assistant who spent considerable time establishing the spec of the Laptop. This involved sharing personal information about myself, bank details , as I myself don’t have an active account and then having a CEX thrust upon me, which will probably end up in the plastics bin. Anyway, the shop assistant stated that due to time constraints, business of the store, it could not be checked right away but I would be given a ring if any issues on my mobile (number given). He indicated there should not be an issue and I would get PS42, price guaranteed for 48 hours if I returned to the shop.

I returned on the Monday to be informed that the laptop had failed the test as it had, I quote “developed a rattle!” The shop assistant very kindly gave me a recycled CEX bag and sent me on my merry way without a penny.

Cost to me in terms of fuel in total PS30, cost to me in terms of time approx 10 hours. Cost of Windows 10 upgrade. Cost to planet, another laptop going to landfill.

As an NHS worker I am well used to dealing with conflicting information, jumping through hoops, lack of communication, putting hours into things and not getting much in return. Ironically CEX is not much different.

Staff are just generally rude, too busy chatting most of the time when there’s people at the till to be served. I went in to sell a bran new open 15, had been out the box only to be looked at. The guy who was serving me couldn’t have be ruder.
Ask me for id which I gave my passport, drivers licence, and a letter with address, he then said “not only is this not in date it’s not good enough” it was a jury duty letter as it’s the only one I could find. Sniggered when he put it down which was weird. So I just said ok I’ll get my bank statement in pdf, I took a second to get it up and my sister who was next to me I said to her “I’ll just sent it over to you” and he interrupted “it has to be pdf” like are you ok? I can send pdfs in messages? once he’d seen it all for some reason he had to take 10 minutes looking at each piece of id.
He started investigating the iPhone so badly spending around 10 minutes looking at every single part of the iPhone. Scrapping it with his disgusting bitten dirty nails. He then said PS349 cash, and I was what? It’s not been used it’s pretty obviously worth more. He then said there is a scratch/mark, he obviously make that himself. Cheap skates trying to lower the price. It should’ve been sold for PS365-PS600. I was only selling it cos my mum wanted me too but if it was for me I wouldn’t even have went because come on it’s “cex” shop for weirdos

went in to sell a few things. guy told me i needed a store membership, not just an online account which was a lie, pulled out a valid id and proof of address and then accused me of fake id to which i proceeded to say that it’s valid and the PASS logo is also on the back of the card (please tell me why someone would use a fake youngscot id?), not only that pulled out multiple proof of address letters only to be told he can’t use this when they are very much valid. also been sold the wrong/faulty products, i paid for a XBOX 360 headset and got one the for XBOX ONE which don’t work together and a faulty Kinect adapter. only go in when i absolutely have as i get everything online without the hassle, store smells of B.O.
