Yesterday I went into Fnac to look at headphones. On exiting the shop one of the security guards, without saying anything, tried to usher me into a side room outside of the shop. I was horrified and refused – why would I go into a weird room with a man I don’t know? He kept trying to insist and I was very scared. Another security guard then approached and began to demand what I had taken. I had taken NOTHING! In my shock, I was struggling to understand (I am not French) but this seemed to make one of them more suspicious, like I was pretending not to understand what was going on. They clearly had someone speaking to them in their earpieces telling them I’d stolen something. Eventually, after me showing them I had nothing and (I’m assuming) the person looking at the cameras rechecking the footage, they let me leave. No apology, nothing. It was traumatic and I will never go back there.
Kudos to the gentleman at the return desk for explaining that the 110v to 220v adapter I bought at the store is only an adapter, not a voltage converter. If you connect an appliance designed for the US market that is only rated for up to 110v to a 220v Euro outlet with the adapter, it’s going fry. I was under the impression that the adapter was designed to take care of the voltage difference as well as the difference in the plug design. There are no warning labels on the adapter packaging to warn you of this. An inexcusable omission in my opinion. The gentleman refunded the money I paid for the adapter and also gave me a cord with a 220v plug that I could plug into my laptop charging brick. (My computer, as well as many appliances, are rated for 110v – 220v and only need the adapter). But make sure the appliance you use the adapter is rated up to 220v. Une lecon apprise.
Good range of electronic equipment, especially computers and tablets. Read other reviews saying it’s expensive but thought the prices reasonable compared to other French electronics shops. I went Saturday afternoon and the shop was very busy and felt claustrophobic. However, it was easy to find friendly, helpful staff to answer a couple of questions.
