STEER WELL CLEAR
In Sept 2020 I bought a brand new Hoover Tumble dryer and paid for a 5 year extended warranty on it from Smiths in Manchester Road, Southport.
My previous 2 Tumble dryers (Bosch) were bought from Smiths in Burscough (same company).
At the time of purchasing these machines Smiths told me that they should last many more years beyond the extended warranty of 5 years whilst pushing me into taking out the 5 year warranties just in case. Their warranties are with a company called Pacifica who Smiths refer to as “Retracare”. Smiths claim that “Retracare” look after you in the event of a breakdown. Pacifica on their website claim to offer “same or next day repairs by fast reliable local engineers UK wide”. This is a complete and utter lie.
I paid Smiths in full for all machines, and 5 year extended warranties on all of them.
All machines broke after 2 years, the latter a brand new Hoover Tumble dryer, broke after 3 years and Pacifica booked a repair engineer to come out 2 weeks later as of Nov 2nd 2023. Then they cancelled the engineer rescheduling for 16th November 23. Then 2 more appointments were cancelled.
Not happy with Pacifica I phoned Smiths and asked them to help as I am an OAP suffering in the wake of being attacked in my home and left with a fractured hip, shoulder injury and arthrosis in all fingers on both hands and I am unsupported living alone. Peter who sold me the Hoover Machine via Smiths to my horror said “What do you expect from a cheap tumble dryer, yours is nearly 3 years old now and they are only meant to last 2 years”. This was the opposite of his stance at the time of purchase when he said I was buying a good brand and it would last and told me that he could no nothing as the matter is for “Retracare/Pacifica” to deal with. I was far from impressed with his dismissive and audacious attitude of “I couldn’t care less”.
I ended up reporting this to Trading Standards and having to pay an engineer to fix my machine and this cost me my whole weeks pension.
Smiths were told by Trading Standards to compensate me, because Pacifica refunded me on the warranty leaving me to now pay for repairs going forward.
Richard Kenyon from Smiths has refused to compensate me, despite promising to replace my tumble dryer and then withdrawing the offer when I paid for mine to be fixed as I could not do without my dryer any longer with laundry mounting high at home. He has left me feeling connect out of hard come by money and I will never buy anything from this awful company again and I warn you not to either. They are a bad company with no respect for their customers.
Their attitude and service is diabolical and they should be prosecuted and closed down by Trading Standards for bad trading practice. Waste of money. Utter rip off.
Update: After initial order on 6th October I finally got my washer on 1st November nearly a month of waiting. That’s way too long but I appreciate it is a niche washer (half size top loader in view of lack of space). However I could have had it a lot quicker online….
A few points.. . I had to call a couple of times in between and was assured that the ‘moment it is in, you will get a call’. Well, no actually. I rang on 27th October and the guy said ‘we would have called you if it was in but let me check’ Upon checking and to his credit he didn’t make excuses about the fact that it was in but no one had told him. As this was later in afternoon I could only get a Wednesday pm.
I called again asking for as early as possible to 12 and the deliverer was there at 12 so that was terrific. I had told the store it was a 2d floor flat without lift but the delivery guy was on his own as no one had told him. He did it all though but it was tough on him and was fantastic and still cheerful so top marks to Alastair (his name).
For me in future I will check first with SmithsTV if they have stock. If they do, they will have my custom. If not, I fear the Internet will be my best bet as 25 or so days without a washer were tough.
There was no communication about the delivery window but I was given tracking details after calling Smiths TV to find out what was happening. The parcel seemed to be on track until an hour before delivery and then disappeared. I called APC ( who I think were useless ) after the latest delivery time had passed and they said they had no idea whether parcel would be delivered that day and they could schedule it for the next day if it didn’t turn up. Needless to say the parcel did not turn up as promised.
I complained to Smiths TV ( as they choose to use the services of a useless company – presumably based on price ) and they have also been useless !
I will never buy from them again !
