Went in to get a power supply changed and was quoted with a silly price. I found the replacement part online for much less than quoted, the manager didn’t even want to know which part I needed, they just picked the most expensive one and upcharged PS20 on the deal.

After buying the part myself and bringing it in, I was again upcharged on the price. I quoted from three trades websites confirming the maximum cost of a PSU replacement job at PS30, which I was happy to pay because I very much wanted to support highstreet shops, and was ignored.

The proprietor later explained they were upset that I told them how to run their business. All I wanted was to be treated fairly and not cheated, and I was refused service. I was forced to perform the entire job at home and it took about 15 minutes.

Please, please check what the parts and labour of the services you are buying from this business. In my case, I was slapped with an exorbitant made-up cost on the spot without any care for my situation.

Reply: Yes, you don’t stock PSUs, which is why you ordered the part in. Also, I stated clearly that I was quoting from trades websites, not other providers. I pleaded with YOU to repair my computer because without a car, I couldn’t move the machine any further. I was ignored.

Why on Earth would I lie and go to all this trouble? How shocking that the proprietor feels the need to discredit the poor experiences his customers try to warn one another of.

Two stars is a bit of a push, but let me explain my reasoning:

As the only seemingly reputable computer repair/maintenance shop in Crawley, i thought i’d give them a go as my computer needed a deep clean (honestly it was so dirty with dust it was really bad) so i took my PC to them one Saturday. I was greeted by a man who seemed to of spoke very little English, which isn’t an issue as I seemed to of conveyed the point that my PC just needed a deep clean. The few days they took to complete it is irrelevant, but as soon as I got home and powered it on i could hear this rattling noise. I didn’t think much of it as I was getting a new PC the week after and had planned to scrap this one anyways (I just wanted it clean so I could easily part it and sell it) many months down the line I have only just gotten around to doing so. Upon opening my PC I have been greeted to my GPU fan having 3 broken fan pieces, which turned out to be the source of the rattling noise. It literally looks like they took the GPU out to clean, and just immediately dropped it as nothing else in the computer is damaged. At the end of the day it is what it is but I paid 50 odd quid and the PC has barely even been cleaned that much. I understand it was in a really dirty condition but that is what your services are for. Safe to say i’ve now taught myself how to repair/clean computers as its a waste taking it to a business.

Took my 26″ iMac into these guys as it had crashed. They tried to fix and first time no luck. So I just left it thinking that was it, I just needed to count my losses. Few weeks later I got a call saying they had managed to locate problem and fixed it. This is honesty for you as they could easily have sold it and made a lot of money. I would have been none the wiser. So thank you Southgate Computers for your honesty and integrity from a very happy iMac owner.
