I’m so disappointed by this service shop that I have to write this review. I went into Tricities a little over a month ago to fix my 2015 Macbook Pro. Previously I went to the Mac shop at Coquitlam Centre to get it diagnosed. I’ve been to Tricities Computers before. The price was a little higher than other shops at that time, but I needed a quick turn over and they provided that, at least.
In this situation, Mac store tried to get me to trade in my computer rather than fix it. They cited that it would take a long time to get the parts because it was the holiday season, and they are known to try and get customers to upsell/trade in their old. They only offered my $100. But I learned what the problem was.
They said it was the TOP CASE that needed to be replaced. In doing so, the keyboard (which had dysfunctioned) the track pad and the battery would be replaced as they’re all connected and you can’t change one without the other.
Again, they didn’t seem interested in repairing it for me.
Enter Tri Cities Computer a few blocks away. I brought it in and told Eric exactly what the Mac store told me. I even told him what they quoted to me. I asked that he open it up and show me where the top case was just for my own information. That was a struggle. He didn’t want to take the time to do so (it was 2 minutes). Then he told me I couldn’t wait in the store because he has other clients that are afraid of Covid. Another weird yellow flag for me. At that point an older gentleman came in with a tower that needed to be fixed and Eric attended to him. There was no fear about us being in the shop. I learned later that the real reason he didn’t want us there was that he was going to apply a 15 minute fix, not replace anything at all, and try charging me $400.00.
I left and returned in 2 hours like he said. I asked him if he had all the parts and he said he did.
I returned in 2 hours and everything was seemingly fine, except the “G” key was not working. That was how the keyboard started to dysfunction. First the “g” key went, then the whole thing went. I also explained that in detail to Eric. My wife can confirm as she was there. IN fact, I had to ask her to come back in when I picked it up to confirm she heard the exact same thing I said because Eric tried telling me that I did not say that, which is besides the point as if he had changed the TOP CASE as was instructed and requested, none of this would happen.
I told Eric that not having a “g” key, or any key for that matter, was not acceptable solution because I can’t be cutting and pasting “g” every time or using the built in virtual keyboard for this.
He started this nonsense retraction trick that I suspect he uses on others who aren’t satisfied with his cut-the-corner repair jobs.
Remember, he was supposed to REPLACE THE TOP CASE which has all new components and problem would be solved. HE DID NOT, but he tried charging me for this.
He said “No problem, I’ll replace everything I took out and no charge to you!”
So he wants to do double the labour for no money? Another yellow flag for me. That makes no sense.
I asked him why the “g” key wouldn’t work if he replaced the keyboard as what WOULD HAVE HAPPENED had he done the repair properly.
He starts talking about things that have nothing to do with the issue
You’re not paying for products but my expertise.
Huh? What? I am most certainly paying for expertise AND the replacement of the key components (THE TOP CASE).
So I asked him what exactly did he replace.
He starts saying that the old parts are already in the garbage. I said “well go get them since you’re going to have to put them back in!”
He says “They’re all over the place!”
