My computer suddenly shut off, then got stuck in a loop of turning on and turning off after 2 seconds again, repeat.

I told them I had checked powercord, surge box and wall outlet; I had checked possible RAM issues; that I had disconnected all components including mobo, cpu, hard drives, rom drives, usb ports, gfx card, and the problem still persisted. I asked if they agreed I should replace the PSU.

“No, definitely not the PSU,” they said. “Replacing RAM would be your cheapest fix.” (Really!? Replacing 32gb of ram is the cheapest option!?) “If you’re not attached to your data, we’d be happy to replace your hard drive, maybe put in a solid state drive.”

I don’t know what my face looked like, but it must have been a misinterpreted expression of surprise since I couldn’t believe they somehow found the logic to think that 1. It was a RAM issue while the mobo wasn’t even powered. 2. That that was the ‘cheapest’ option. 3. That they suggested a hard drive swap. 4. That they suggested installing an SSD without checking whether I already had one. (I do. 2.)

“Definitely not the PSU,” they reiterated, even though I pointed out I highly suspected the PSU probably shut off to protect the innards and that there were some weird crackles in the current PSU.

“Nah, that’s normal,” they said. “Could be your mobo, but probably just RAM. We can replace 32gb for around 600$”

I bought a PSU for 100$, installed it myself and everything works perfectly again. Except this nagging feeling that many customers probably have ended up paying 6 times as much without having their problem solved.

Will never use their services. Seriously, you’re better off asking your local computer enthusiast or repair shop around the corner.

My all-in-one printer, which I bought from Best Buy 11 months ago, went on the fritz a few days ago; I can’t send faxes for some reason. I tried everything I could to troubleshoot it, without success. I finally decided to call my local Geek Squad here in Federal Way – all I can say is WOW! Whoever the other two reviewers are, their experiences sure aren’t mine! “Agent Ann” spent close to 45 minutes with me on the phone, set up a home appointment and found a way to save me money on the repair (about half of what it would have cost). She even gave me homework to do beforehand to have my Voip provider check my network connection in the event that’s the problem, in which case, I get to call the Geek Squad back and cancel my appointment, without charge. “Agent Ann” was very patient with me – I have been raising three of my grandkids since they were born (now ages 4, 8 and 10) and two were severely drug affected in-utero; I had to ask the agent to hold at least ten times to deal with the kids. She was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. For the past eight or ten years, I have bought nearly all my tech equipment and toys from them, and they’ve always had my back.

After having HelloTech out, who did not get my internet/networking back online after having paid for that and wanting to charge me more to come back out, I called Geek Squad with the intent to have them out to get me back up and running. (I have had previous good experiences with Geek Squad). The tech on the phone ran me through several possible fixes and determined it would take someone to come out. So I thanked him and said I would try one last thing with Centurylink, which I did. In the end, I didn’t need anyone to come out; Centurylink had a nice tech person who volunteered to help me because he had had the same problem at home. Technically they were not supposed to help me but he did. At any rate, Geek Squad spent time with me on the phone for free and whenever I have a need again, I would call them.
