After 5 minutes trying to turn my laptop on, the reparator told me that the graphic chip was faulty and that it needed to be replaced. He told me that it would cost 250EUR to replace the graphic chip, compared to 500EUR to change the whole motherboard.
He wanted me to pay in advanced, in cash, with no quote. Meanwhile I was not sure yet that I wanted to do such a repair. So, I left him my laptop and told him that I had not made my mind yet and that I would come back later with the money.
I took the time to search on the Internet about my problem. I found out that one can buy a motherboard for something between 100EUR and 150EUR on the Internet, and that the issue with HP laptops may not be a faulty graphic chip but rather a problem of faulty solderings (and therefore the chip does not need to be replaced).
When I came back, I had made the decision to not get my laptop repaired.
However, the reparator asked me to pay 30EUR for the diagnosis, with which I disagreed.
I have experience with other computer repair shops. Until now, I never had to pay for a 5 minute “diagnosis”. This is usually given as a commercial gesture, especially when the failure is obvious.
Usually, one pays when a significant amount of time is spent on the computer.
Moreover, he only tried to switch on my laptop and then plugged a screen on it. That’s all what he did.
He never opened my laptop and never did any further investigation.
Furthermore, I was never given any quote for the repair, and therefore would have paid EUR250 without having any claim against the work to be done.
I am happy to not have done business there.
Finally, I was able to fix my laptop by myself. I didn’t have to disassembly it nor to change any component.
It seems it was a very well known problem with HP DV6 about which plenty information is available on the Internet, about which the reparator knew instantaneoulsy, and which required no diagnosis.
It certainly did not require to change the chip, for which I was supposed to pay, and the diagnosis I paid for was inaccurate.
Answer to the vendor’s answer:
A not even 5 minute diagnosis is not a diagnosis. EUR30 for 5 minutes, it is much more expensive than for a doctor.
It took only 5 minutes because the vendor did not have to search for the problem. It is a very well known problem for HP laptops… The vendor was standing up holding the laptop during the diagnosis. It means he spent a very small amount on time on my laptop.
Then, I was given wrong information regarding the repair. The chip did not need to be replaced whereas I was told it would cost an additional EUR50.
I should have also been given a quote with the description of the repair and its price, instead of being asked to pay EUR250 upfront. Normally, a vendor does not ask to pay before the repair is made.
Finally references to my nationality were made that I did not appreciate at all.
This 5 minute diagnosis should have been offered as a commercial gesture. Anywhere else it would have been offered.
I feel like this vendor wanted to take advantage of the fact that my German is limited and wanted to cheat me. I perceived him as completely dishonnest.
Now my German is really bad and I could give the guy the benefit of a doubt, but charging 90EUR for 1 hour work with no parts replacement or fixing, is a ridiculous price. It’s almost half of the value of the laptop!
I recommend to double check the price in advance and to make sure it is indeed reasonable.
